Thank you for the hint, I will obtain the division declaration. The exterior appearance of the house is under monument protection; it is not an individual monument, but part of an ensemble.

Nearby, a historic water mill also was renovated and converted into almost 20 apartments, which could only be purchased after the renovation was completed. It turned out beautifully and the apartments there have style (but also an elevator/balconies). So everything according to today's standards. Seems to be a common approach. And inside, the modern apartments combined with the mill's classic façade are very nice. It feels really cozy inside (original pillars/supports still visible in the walls and nicely illuminated). I think something like that has a certain charm.

We have always checked out the neighbors when looking at potential houses. We had bad neighbors for years in the rental apartment. Especially with children, this should not be underestimated.

Whereas in a single-family house, I don't really care about the neighbors. A high fence is good enough.

It’s difficult here because you share the driveway. Sooner or later, you will have points of contact. The property surely looks great, but I wouldn’t start that anyway. The monument authority can be very annoying, plus it’s expensive, and I also don’t see taking 30 years without thinking about renovation. It’s still heated with gas. Aren’t there any newer houses in your price range?

So I have now looked and in the region the TE there are many new houses between 500-650k. However, almost only semi-detached houses at that price with 150-160 m2 of living space. That would of course be the safe alternative. And there you are either, like now, in a [WEG] (with the same disadvantages and advantages) or maybe even really divided. What speaks against that?
