Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me. I have divided a gallery floor into two rooms and want to build a staircase there (it is more of a storage chamber floor with rare use, so no proper staircase is necessary). It will be a straight 17/28 staircase, 70 cm wide (as mentioned, a staircase, not a structurally removable stair) with a quarter turn (intermediate landing) made of 25 mm and 35 mm spruce. The steps will be fully closed, and the space underneath will become a built-in cupboard (whose frame could also become the "stair feet"). One side stringer should actually be fixed to the wall - but now my problems:
1.) How do I prevent creaking in a fully closed staircase (components inevitably rub against each other)?
2.) Doesn't the built-in cupboard underneath act as a gigantic resonator?
3.) Is it acoustically better for a cantilevered (or standing on the cupboard’s frame structure) staircase than fastening the stringers to the wall?
4.) Is a complete structural separation of staircase (now planned as cupboard ceiling) and cupboard possibly recommended?
So how do I reasonably make this thing quiet - thanks for the help!

Hi,

if I were you, I would definitely separate the stairs from the cabinet because the sound is happy when it finds such a nice big surface to spread out on.

Hi,

if you don't need a proper staircase, you can also install a space-saving staircase, which doesn't require that much space.

Would that be an idea for you?

Hi,

if it is a staircase that is not used very often, the acoustics should not be that bad. It is different if the staircase is constantly used.

Soundproofing Stairs

Hello Pflaume massiv,

for soundproofing in such areas, a rubber granulate mat (delivery form e.g. 10 m x 1.25 m; thickness 6mm) is particularly suitable, which you can cut and use in the transitions between the different materials.
