Wooden balcony, what to do?

I have inherited a house and we want to renovate the interior at the beginning of next year. We are also getting new windows and a new facade paint. Grey windows and white facade. Now we still have the wood. I want to renew and repaint the privacy boards. Or rather the entire wood in a different color. What is suitable for this? Glaze? Oil? Paint? We want the new wood not to differ in color from the existing wood. Do you have any ideas?

Hello Benedikt, Wood ages over time, i.e., the lignin embedded in the wood is broken down. Lignin is responsible for the strength of the wood; over time the surface strength decreases, wood weathers. Old and new wood therefore differ in color appearance due to biological reasons. Such wood is difficult to repaint; the lignin-free (somewhat fibrous) surface would have to be completely sanded down until the natural wood color tone is visible again – then it can be varnished, glazed, or the wood can be allowed to weather again together with the renewed boards. Painting in a light color would provide the best weather protection, as UV rays do not reach the wood surface; a similarly good effect is achieved by highly pigmented glazes. These keep the wood grain visible and also add color – but require regular refreshing of the glaze (since a small amount of UV light does reach the wood surface, > weathering).
