Hello to all house building experts and renovation comrades,
as it is when you register in a forum, you are interested in the topic and usually have questions.
A brief introduction to myself and the property! My name is - not hard to guess - Wolfgang, 52 years old and with over 30 years of experience in the automotive trade, I would say I’m not clumsy. Our house is my wife’s parents’ house, built in 1962/63 (so the house ;)), extended by an annex in 2001 and since then registered as a two-family house, located near Frankfurt am Main. Now, after the passing of my parents-in-law, we want to renovate and convert the apartment on the ground floor for ourselves. Since our budget is limited considering what lies ahead, much has to be done by ourselves or by assisting the experts.
On the subject, the former dining room is to become the kitchen for us, unfortunately in the past people built all over the place, and my father-in-law was an artist in the sense of “it works, but looks terrible,” so I want to change one or two things. For my plan, the window is firstly too low, and secondly, on one side the roof of the carport protrudes into the window.
I would regulate the height of the window via the roller shutter, removing the interior roller shutter and installing an exterior roller shutter. The questions about reducing the window reveal are a bit bigger; I want to reduce it from about 2.10 meters to 1.60 meters. Which bricks do I best use? How do I create a stable and secure wall connection? Can I glue the bricks for such small work, or must I definitely use mortar?
Since after adjusting the reveal I should have a smooth masonry (smooth finish), I would install the window with a surrounding sealing tape (outer sealing tape, inner insulating tape). Do I additionally use compressible tape? Are there any recommendations for window tape or do Amazon products work just as well? What should I use to glue the window tape to the masonry? How do I calculate the required screw length for fastening the window?
A lot of text, many questions! I am grateful for any tip and advice.
Best regards
