Window according to regulations?

Hello, we want to build in an area where some houses already stand. Now the neighbors have told us that all the windows here should be uniform. Can the rest of the street really dictate what kind of windows we are allowed to install? This was not mentioned during the planning and the architect said nothing about it!!

If the windows are supposed to be uniform, then in the end you may only plant plants or trees that everyone has?
