Ah ok, we have those too but actually mortared. When I think of a dry stone wall, I thought of those semicircular concrete infill stones.

Hi,

our stones are at least as "coarse" since they are bossed basalt.

In my opinion, it should be completely sufficient to backfill up to the first row of stones with gravel, since from then on there are open joints everywhere anyway.

What I still wonder: fleece behind the stones or not? What do you think? As it is now (without soil between the joints etc.) it actually looks nice :)

Is the bottom row then really loose or in a foundation after all?

Actually also dry, underneath there is a foundation made of mineral concrete and then comes some gravel so that the stones rest firmly.

The wall is not 100% dry built either, in a few places you just had to "smear" a bit underneath because some stones are simply completely crooked.

, the stone you linked is relatively flat, you can build higher with that. With the granite we chose, that would not be possible.
