Hello Christian,
I think it depends on how new the house is: in our current '52 house, my husband and my father-in-law installed a new radiator together: a nerve-wracking, hours-long job because the connections didn’t fit, etc.
Advantage: Cheap 100€ for an online purchased Buderus radiator. It would have been quite expensive with a craftsman.
Disadvantage: Nerve-racking :)

I can understand the craftsmen who do not want to play the "strikebreaker" for online shops that only sell goods without also "supplying" the customer with a suitable installation partner. Consumers who think it is "clever" to simply string together the cheapest components must learn that this does not create smoothly running systems. By the way, the economy is also such a system: if I, as a customer, do not pay the craftsman, he goes to the employment office and then I pay him as a taxpayer. Then the wholesaler is out and the bureaucracy is involved. Is that really cheaper?

Still don't understand? It's not about installing the cheapest component, but exactly the same product/material.

If the craftsman properly charges for his work, then everything is fine. Unfortunately, there is sometimes extreme value creation between equity / retail price compared to the consumer. And just because it has always been that way, it doesn't have to stay that way. Value creation has become significantly more transparent since the internet has existed.

To go back to the oil example: I can get Castrol with the manufacturer's required quality standard for €6.50 per liter. The workshop wants €30-35 per liter for the "same" oil from the drum.

Our workshop charges nothing extra if you bring your own oil (it is only noted in the service booklet).

There are online shops where you can book the installation as well. Both for air conditioning and heating, etc. I don't know if it is cheaper, but at least the material price is taken from the online shop.

I would install it myself too. It’s not rocket science. With the money you save, you can go on vacation ;)

You don’t need to worry about the poor craftsmen. They earn enough anyway..for now :P

Which hot water tank do you use? I am looking for a hot water tank with a connection option for a heating element.
