I use a hammer, hook the hammerhead and lift it up by the handle

Meal time,

so I also use such a crowbar and check it every other month. Our filter looks like this. I got a long rod and mounted a kind of fork at the front. With it, I pull out the filter once in spring and autumn/winter and rinse it clean. The water from the cistern is crystal clear. All downpipes have two filters installed with us. One at the top in the gutter and one below just before the inlet into the pipes. Works great. I also clean them twice a year.
