We are planning a new building and want to heat the house using an air-to-water heat pump. The electricity demand for this as well as our other electricity needs should be covered as far as possible by our own photovoltaic system and storage. In winter, with the sun low in the sky, there may be shadows caused by a park opposite. The house is oriented with the gables facing north-south; thus, the roof surfaces face east and west. We have obtained offers from 2 specialist companies. The companies offer completely different systems regarding performance and scope. Now we are totally uncertain. What is the appropriate system for our property? We want to choose the right size for our house.

Company A offers:
Novelan package LADV 9-HSDV 12
Package BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 5.1 with Fronius Symo Hybrid 5.0-3-S
15 Trina Solar photovoltaic modules 340 TSM-DE06M.08

Company B offers:
Buderus Logaplus WLW196 iAR-9 WLW196i-8ART190, 1HK, P120.5S-B Logaplus heat pump package WLW196 iAR-9 with Logatherm WLW196i-8 ART190, reversible air-water heat pump incl. tower and buffer storage for monoenergetic operation.
Photovoltaic system with 9.9 kWp total output; brand: Q-Cells 30 x QPEAK 330 black heat pump
Home power plant E3/DC S10 E All in One 6.50 kWh; expandable up to 19.5 kWh

It is a new building. Gable roof house with external dimensions 14.50 m x 10 m. On the ground floor there is an apartment for 2 people. In the attic, initially only a granny flat for 1 person with approx. 42 sqm living space will be set up; the rest initially remains as an attic. The total usable area of the attic is 80 sqm.

A wood stove is to be installed in the hallway. Electricity consumption according to average values.

Hello, I increasingly get the impression that the heating engineers want to force us to plan our houses according to their offered heat pumps! Both offers lack the statement that the heat pump can only be offered after the heating load calculation is available. So in my eyes, both offers are bad. Buderus means nothing to me. The Novelan is at least a modulating heat pump, but it could be much too large in capacity... So back to square one and first commission the heating load calculation. This is absolutely necessary for a heat pump; with a gas heating system, you can more or less overdimension by rule of thumb. Other people can write more about photovoltaics with storage. Storage mostly seems to be more an expensive hobby than economically sensible. Do NOT integrate the stove into the hydraulics, no water jacket. Look for an open stove with a large storage mass like a masonry heater, for example, otherwise the house will overheat. Also, the stove should not be chosen by rule of thumb; good stove builders can calculate this. Regards, Daniel

The first photovoltaic system is definitely too small. The second one is probably also too small for your roof. How large are the roof surfaces? Are there dormers, skylights, or the like?

Why are they offering storage with the photovoltaic system? Did you ask about that? One kWh from the storage costs you around 40 to 50 cents. That is far too expensive for the foreseeable future. Since you have a heat pump, you can store excess energy in the concrete of the house in winter by having the heat pump work more when photovoltaic power is available. In summer, you feed in and receive the compensation, which is still above your production costs of the electricity. But watch out for the 52GWh cap.

There is a special forum for photovoltaics. Google that and read the FAQ there. Then you will know much better what to pay attention to.
