hello, we actually wanted to build a large carport with 6 m width and 8 m length and also build a storage room ourselves inside it. However, we now have the problem with the snow load at an altitude of 735 m. A snow load of 297 kg/m² was recommended to us. And now we face the problem that there are hardly any manufacturers for that. What experiences do you have? Or would a garage be better? Unfortunately, we calculated everything with a carport ..... Thank you very much in advance for your tips .....

A good carport costs about as much as a prefabricated garage. In my opinion, it should not be a problem for your budget if you switch now. Rhineland greetings

Hi,
A roof load of 300 kg/sqm is a thing. With that, in the usual simple carport designs with 2 supports over 6 m or 3 over 8 m length, you have a line load on the beams of easily 750-800 kg/m depending on the roof construction. For a 6 m span and L/300 max deflection, you end up with about an IPE 240, which is a 240 mm high double T profile, as the main roof beam.
Even with main beams running longitudinally on the supports and only secondary purlins in the meter grid as the roof structure, you still need to handle about 350 kg/m max load. For that, you still need an IPE 200 beam, and that in the meter grid.

In other words, it's doable, no problem! But this is really no longer standard and requires a quite massive use of steel. It probably won’t look pretty and elegant anymore.
At this size and roof loads, the construction must be able to carry a roof load of almost 17 tons. And that on a 6 m free span...

Maybe get in touch with a local steel construction company, maybe they have some nice ideas.

Best regards,

Andreas

How about a much steeper roof (e.g. gable roof), where snow can also fall/slide off to the sides?! That would still make it possible with the snow guards, because your house roof is then built the same way. A flat roof is no solution with such amounts of snow anyway. A prefabricated garage is not much more stable structurally than a proper carport. Our carport already has 5, or rather 6, pillars distributed over almost 9 meters in length (on each side).
