Ask around among friends and acquaintances if anyone needs to thin out or if you can get seedlings. Mother and mother-in-law have some things that we can simply pick up.

The hedge is spread over nearly 50 meters, many of the plants naturally occur multiple times in the hedge. It is important that the plants are placed slightly zigzag and the distance between the plants is large enough (even if the space looks too large at the beginning, the plants quickly use it). In the first year, hardly any growth could be observed because the plants used all their energy to root. We are now in the fourth summer after planting and we are thrilled: the plants are already growing together into a clearly visible hedge, especially the lilac and the sea buckthorn have already reached a height of 2m. It is particularly nice that something is always blooming and that there are so many butterflies, bees, and bumblebees in the garden, and birds also regularly find food on the shrubs. In winter, there is of course hardly any privacy screen, but we don't mind.

We have about 25 meters less there. I just wanted a nice colorful hedge that always has something blooming. I would have planted them in a row. Thanks for the tip about the zig-zag.

Next week the property will be cleaned up - our piles of stones have to be moved to a corner or transported away. From the excavation of the terrace, at least 4 cubic meters of sandstone are already missing, you don’t even notice. After that, the mason starts. I would like to plant in the fall.

Autumn is great for that, we have done it that way too. I fertilize our shrubs every spring with a handful of horn shavings each time, that seems to help quite well.

If you want to have some evergreens mixed in at some spots, you can also occasionally plant a thuja or cherry laurel in between, but that's really a matter of taste.

Expect that after the first winter you might have to replace one or two plants because they froze or did not take well (with us, a hedge rose and a lilac were affected back then).
