Hello dear users,

I am in talks with a general contractor and now have a finished, individually planned floor plan in front of me. The cost of the house was roughly communicated to me during the conversation (approximate price). However, the exact offer will only be calculated once the floor plan is also approved to avoid unnecessary work. I want to install an additional window in one room. Therefore, the question: What is cheaper for a general contractor? Windows or masonry? Does it even make a difference?

Thank you for your answers.

Biff

Window is more expensive. However, not to the extent that one should consider foregoing a window that is actually desired. The price differences are more noticeable in the type/design of the window and the shading solution.

With our construction provider, masonry and windows are price-neutral. Of course, if it involves special XXL windows or something like that, it can look different again.

Windows are always more expensive*. Large windows are expensive because they are large, and small windows are expensive because their area is not deducted from the wall costs – you pay for the window in addition to the wall at that point. But don't let that stop you, as long as it is not an absurdly luxurious window.

*not passing on the costs to the customer is, of course, possible

Basically, you asked the wrong question.
Yes, windows are more expensive from 4 sqm upwards. That's what we were told. It's not just about the material but also the installation. Mixed calculation. But that matters less to you than the fact of how the GC charges.
There are GCs or home builders like e.g. Scanhaus Marlow Marlow, Danwood, Town & Country and many solid builders who basically charge a surcharge for every small change. With windows they scent money and take it from the living.
But there are also others, like e.g. with or with us: we could basically install our amounts of windows wherever we wanted, including asymmetrical ones under the roof or window bands. Without surcharge.

So you have to ask your GC what he charges for it.
