At least not with 400 sqm of greenery. Of course, you can still install an irrigation system if you want. For example, we used 10 cbm this summer. Let's say 20 if we water extensively and start vegetable cultivation. We pay about €1 per cbm of fresh water here (sewage charges do not apply, since it’s a garden water meter) - so it would take 50 years for the well to pay off.

But doesn't the garden water meter also have to be replaced and read sometimes? That doesn't cost little money either.

30€ every 6 years.
How long do you think your pump lasts?

Okay, so would a garden water meter be the better alternative? It would probably have to be requested from the municipality or does the local supplier handle that?

Drainage fees are set by the municipality, as far as I know. There is a statute for that. Maybe you can even find your municipality's statute on the internet.

Our plumber kindly took care of that for us - we didn't even know we had something like that (we probably mentioned it once in a conversation)

If you want, you can of course also drill a well - you'd be in good company with that - but purely from a financial standpoint, it rarely pays off.
