I would design that little garden myself. This year, I wouldn’t do anything at all. Next spring, you can slowly start with the back part, the construction area doesn’t extend that far. First, make a plan of what you actually want to have. The fruit trees don’t look like they could be transplanted, at least not with reasonable effort (as far as can be seen in the picture). So I would leave standing what doesn’t get in the way. Then dig up the rest; you don’t have to do it all in one day, or rent a rototiller. Get the roots out. And then redesign, maybe some flowers, shrubs, lawn, whatever you like. Things too close to the construction site should be designed after the construction is finished.

One should not complete step 17 before step 1…

That would be a wonderful task for 1-2 nice vacation days. Trailer for green waste, shovel for replanting, brush cutter and a chilled crate of beer (also for the neighbors).

Afterwards, you know what you have done and it clearly feels like "your" property.

But none of this is a must. It's just an interesting change compared to a 2-day all-inclusive holiday in a wellness spa.

Thank you all for the answers! Then we'll let it rest and grow for now and take care of it in the spring. Quite a lot of the flowers die off anyway during the winter.

To hell with the brush cutter. A manual scythe is more effective and gentler. Except for one's own calorie requirements. But that's not a problem.

We have completely killed everything with glyphosate before reseeding and planting, then rototilled, then started anew.
