The substrate must always be adapted accordingly. For Poroton or Ytong, less bonding primer is needed, but instead deep primer to seal off the highly absorbent material. Here, adhesion is given by the relatively rough surface.
Other substrates may not absorb as strongly; here, a bonding primer is rather needed to facilitate adhesion. This is done when tiling over tiles. The bonding primer is important in this case.
Or the top plaster on facades. It also needs bonding primer. Usually, quartz sand and deep primer are combined to provide proper adhesion and a barrier in the base plaster.
But I would definitely say that treating the Poroton substrate with deep primer is essential when using gypsum plaster. Otherwise, look at your bathroom; the plaster will come off again.
Moreover, deep primer isn't even expensive. You don't need a brand product for it. 10 L cost about 12 euros.
