We had an old house fitted with a new roof according to WK guidelines. The insulation above the rafters is PUR / PIR rigid foam with an upper lining made of a 3-layer underlay membrane of class UDB-A made of polypropylene. On the underside, combined with a 3 cm wood fiberboard and membrane foil. The vapor barrier was properly installed.
After the roof was closed, it started to smell like cat urine; this condition has now lasted for 5 months. The manufacturer of the insulation material verbally recommends not to remove the attic because the smell even penetrates through the membrane foil. The smell is said to be caused by cutting the wood fiberboard, according to the specialist dealer, and at the cut edge it smells exactly like cat urine. However, after 2-6 weeks, it should stop – it still smells so pervasively. Therefore, we gave the roofer a deadline of 1 month. Only an email came back with the note that he would take care of it. Then only the insulation material supplier came once, smelled, and said removal is not possible. Now the deadline has expired and the tenant of the house is asking how the removal of his rented attic space will proceed.
Are there any suggestions for defect rectification (ventilation – air fresheners ... forget it!) if not for evidence preservation – how should one proceed?
Roof costs were 30,000 euros. Now it will surely not get any cheaper; in addition to experts, rent reduction, disposal, another half year and all the trouble.
