How would you respond to the inquiry? Possibly with a deadline?
By what means was the request made (orally? by telephone? in writing?). I would respond in the same way. What reasons are there that the excavation cannot be stored on the respective own property? Why should it be done at your place? Is that understandable? Sensible?
As others have also written, I would record the storage conditions in writing. This includes a date when the stuff will be removed again, who is responsible for ensuring that the stuff is removed, and who bears the costs.
If the neighbor is serious and friendly, he will of course have no objections to such a document. He means no harm but is asking for a favor and knows that he must establish the necessary basis of trust.
If everything is pleasant, you can meet on the thus created "commander's hill" and toast with a beer to the neighbor's new building rising next to it.
