Good morning everyone,

we built new two years ago and are now planning a sunshade on our terrace, which is not quite so easy because we have a bay window in the middle of the house and it is therefore difficult to attach something properly.

We are basically open, but would like to be flexible, which is why a large fixed parasol, an awning, or even a sun sail appeal to us more than a fixed roof. Since the patch of lawn in front of the terrace on this side is quite narrow, it would be ideal if we did not have to concrete in posts or similar there - something freestanding would therefore be desirable (but we are aware that not everything works out as we wish).

Actually, it is mainly about being able to retreat into the shade sometimes, but we would also find it very nice if we were at least a little protected from light rain. With the German weather in summer, you never know...

So far we have been recommended a 4x5 parasol, others want to concrete in a beam on the right side in order to then extend the awning so that we have protection all the way to the very right end of the terrace.

In front of the garage would of course not be covered in this way, I would also like to have something there to cover the grill, but that is secondary for now, since there are BBQ covers available to buy directly.

Maybe one of you has a great idea.

I already wish you a wonderful Easter!

A beautiful umbrella is a good and flexible solution that largely meets your desire for "pillarlessness".

The German engineering solution would be to place a fixed terrace roof with a sun sail at 4000 in the corner. The pragmatic solution says, go to Ikea and buy the big umbrella and the heavy concrete base with handles. Good quality, good price, clear head. K.

You can also have sailcloth sewn to your desired shape. Then set a post in this rock garden and fasten it with carabiners. A nice large rain and windproof canopy.

In our current townhouse, we had an IKEA umbrella of about 2.5 x 2.5m in blue and made of wood in the first years. It was great and cozy. Then we took down an awning at my parents' house and installed it at ours. It serves well (described in another thread). The umbrella was cozier.

A awning is not recommended for him because of the angle. I don't think much of sun sails. Here, they are broken too often by the wind.
