Our top-floor rental apartment was completely renovated for first occupancy in 2010. Of course, it was insulated as well. We have only skylights in all rooms. We usually only heat from the end of October to the end of March or mid-April. The heating costs are therefore minimal; so far, we have almost always received money back in the utility bill settlement. Great! Unfortunately, however, the apartment is so hot outside the heating period, at the latest from the beginning of May until September, that it is hardly bearable. Shading the double casement windows hardly helped - the - however inward-facing - blinds heat up so much from the sun that they themselves emit a lot of heat. Without blinds, however, you turn into dried fruit after a short time. In the best case, the indoor temperature with fully open windows corresponds to the outdoor temperature. When the windows are closed, it becomes absurdly hot as soon as the sun shines. Over time, the draft in summer gets annoying. Also, we live in a quite social neighborhood - sometimes in the evening the guitar is unpacked in the courtyard, and a campfire is never missing. The neighborhood children are all very lively (from about 7 a.m.), their parents rather not, because they have partied until the early hours with guitar by the campfire. Although located on a side street, the tram stop is not far away. It starts running early at 4:30 a.m. Fortunately, you do not notice these things with closed windows. The sound insulation is great. Unfortunately, you cannot stand the heat at night with closed windows. So by now we know exactly who celebrates where and when. The two shared apartments in the neighboring house are very funny, and they always have good stuff to smoke. The cannabis scent is a welcome change from the rather mundane campfire smell. When in the summer heat a refreshing rain shower falls in the evening, we throw open the double casement windows and it cools - unfortunately not down. Because we have to close the windows quickly again, otherwise the parquet floor gets ruined by the rain. The steam development after rain on the heated tiled roof is also nice. The humidity that comes in through the necessarily slightly opened double casement windows gives the room temperature the right kick. NEVER AGAIN TOP FLOOR WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING! NEVER AGAIN TOP FLOOR WITH DOUBLE CASEMENT WINDOWS!
This summer was our last in our beautiful but unfortunately uninhabitable summer attic apartment. We will move into our new house at the beginning of December. There isn’t a single double casement window there...
