Thank you very much for your opinions and ideas. I will call the metalworker who installed the railings on Monday. The fall height is actually quite high, which is why we also want a fundamental solution there. However, I also find the wall2wall solution very interesting, especially since there is enough space. I will get some quotes.

You only need that stuff temporarily at most. I wouldn’t aim for anything “permanent” and would just hold out the three years with, for example, the solution from toxicmolotow. And practice, practice, practice instead of banning, banning, and banning again. Instead of putting everything behind fixed bars, I would rather invest in a handrail for children, if anything.

Absolutely right. I also always think that we grew up without our parents having internet advice etc. However, I already found the fall height risky for adults when inspecting the house. Especially when you consider that a fall height of more than 3-5 steps is an indication for alerting an emergency doctor and admission to a shock room (sorry for the smart ass comment).

That's how I see it too, we also do not use stair gates but practice with the children. However, the situation here is somewhat special due to the height.

Between the 2 staircases, I would install a "Ganzglasgeländer mit Glaspunkthaltern" (just Google it).

Unfortunately, it is often the case in many threads that after questions and proposed solutions, no results are ever presented. I want to at least change this a little: Our solution was the retrofitting of a stainless steel railing. (Starting situation see beginning of the thread) Upwards with 3 metal rods, because otherwise the "bumpy" stair design would have created a very large gap. The remaining gaps will be creatively covered with ribbons/cloths/nets for the time "child-is-small". At the bottom, we will temporarily install wooden gates. The railing cost about €2000, which I find reasonable: 2 men, a full working day (about 9 hours each) plus preparatory work plus material...
