Hello everyone! I haven't dealt much with building and renovating so far and am therefore a bit clueless. I am currently interested in a house that is a little over 30 years old and would also like to do quite a bit of work on it myself. During the first viewing, I noticed some strange braces in the attic (about 50 cm long, see photos) and don't know what to make of them. It looks like they are anchored in the floor and external wall. There are 4 of them on the upper floor. Has anyone of you maybe seen something similar before? Thanks in advance for your help!

I am not familiar with it either. But it seems to me as if these Moniereisen are supposed to hold the wall in place.

That would probably need to be clarified first. Especially since the area cannot be used then.

Hello!

Without guarantee:
I have never seen anything like this either, but it looks like tensile forces from the roof must be transmitted through this. If you cut these, the roof will push the wall away.

These forces can also be absorbed in other ways, e.g. by an additional/stronger purlin/steel beam or probably also by steel brackets with sufficient tensile load capacity, but for that you need a new structural calculation and the corresponding building application, etc. etc.

Best regards

Oops,
this looks as if a defect occurred at the house afterwards, for example as describes, and it could only be fixed by such a device.

Personally, I would stay away from it. Maybe one could live with these iron pieces – with clever furnishing they would not be noticeable, but the defect itself (even corrected) would make me suspicious.
