Does anyone of you have a steel garage, and if so, are there any disadvantages?

I have recently gathered many offers for simple garages, and I almost fell over when almost all concrete garage manufacturers want 10,000 for a simple box, 9x3m.

Steel garages cost half. I just wonder: Where is the catch?

Hello,

I actually assumed that the users here would respond and therefore held back....

There is no catch; steel garages have their "bad" reputation from earlier times because they were made with corrugated walls.

When people talk about steel garages, many think of cheap sheet metal garages. The real difference from other garage systems is the modular construction. It is possible to purchase corresponding garages as a system. The walls are usually plugged together and can be changed or expanded at any time. For example, a single garage can later become a double garage – with or without a partition wall. To the layperson, there is no visible difference.

What you must not overlook with many steel garage providers is that you have to take care of a foundation/slab yourself. So additional costs will arise, and then the price difference to a concrete garage is no longer quite so significant.

The precast concrete garage, which is completely preassembled, is delivered to the agreed location by a special vehicle; including the floor slab. Here you only have to provide 2 or 3 strip foundations.

Kind regards

I was offered point foundations for the steel garage for €800. Apart from that, the rest should simply be paved as usual, like the driveway. I actually think that's a good idea. Or should one already have a concrete slab poured?

Hello,

From my experience, most prefab garage providers are moving away from point foundations – they only use them additionally under door openings (e.g. an extra garden door) – and instead build on strip foundations. In your case, that would be 3 for a prefab garage 3 x 9; a continuous foundation around the perimeter would also be an option. Point foundations have sometimes given way in the past, strip foundations do not exhibit this unpleasant characteristic.

Kind regards

Thank you, this objection really makes sense. We received a tip from a colleague to found the garage on mineral concrete and pave on it. We will probably have a steel garage installed. At least in a few years, we will still get some money for it if we want to upgrade to a double garage [Stahlschrott als Investment].
