Valid point! You probably won't be able to make much rent from it, that's true. As an accessible apartment for your own parents (who could then also use the other garden), depending on the life situation, it could be an option.

Parents would also like to have sunshine in the apartment and don't want to spend their existence in a dark closet :-)

What kind of rentability is generally given? Since you would foreseeably need the rooms yourselves, "time renters" would be more suitable here, possibly students who want to live cheaply (does it financially work out for you then?) or commuters or the like? Does the location allow for that with you?

And yes, someone already wrote it, "you have to want that too." I have lived twice in a granny flat, 1) the landlord wanted a cash cow, but not a roommate, and in 2) I was part of the family, that was really great. You just don't know exactly beforehand how you will get along and how you will manage. How close would you be to each other at your place?

Lead time can probably say something about that?

If I'm not mistaken, he realized something like that, but with 2 apartments and not contiguous.

I think the idea is cool, IF the money is available for it. Financially speaking, you should rather not consider something like that if you ask about profitability.

This is how it is. Therefore: If the goal is to do something good for the children or, for that matter, one's own parents, then go ahead. The goal of obtaining partial financing for one's own construction through this should rather be buried immediately.
