How much time do you have for the personal contribution? From the financing thread, I gather that you both work full-time. Do you have enough time in the evenings or on weekends, or have you saved vacation days so that you can manage it time-wise?

As for your criteria and what is probably worthwhile to accomplish but will also take some time, especially if you don’t regularly do such tasks, these are primarily:
- Painting work both indoors and outdoors (there is little that can go wrong here and usually it is one of the last tasks. So you have enough time).
- Flooring work indoors should also be feasible. It should be noted that you will definitely need some tools that you may not have. Usually, local craftsmen will help out for a fee.
- Insulation work should also be possible.

What I would rather advise against is the external insulation of the basement area. What if it’s not watertight, etc... too much trouble.

Otherwise, perhaps some work outdoors still needs to be done on the ground floor. (Paving work requires quite a bit of skill but is time-irrelevant and can be done well by one or two people themselves).

I see hardly any potential savings there. I would only mention the painting, and that should not be underestimated. Outdoor facilities are also hardly manageable for the untrained – usually heavy equipment is needed, and not everyone can drive an excavator or lift a vibrating plate from the trailer. I often find it more helpful to try to do more in your job and thereby be able to pay professionals. Just talk to the boss and ask if you can get some overtime? For us, that brought results faster, albeit rather by chance.

I haven't read it. After spending 3 and a half weeks painting with my husband, I wouldn't give any advice anymore. Only about giving up the basement: I do recommend that!!!
