Hello,

we would like to install a wood-burning stove in our house. However, since we do not yet have a chimney, it must first be retrofitted. The planned fireplace is not located on an exterior wall, so from our point of view only a lightweight chimney comes into question.

Since we have a bungalow built with a wooden frame construction without an attic, and thus the roof (25º) adjoins the living space directly, the lightweight chimney should be routed directly through the roof about 40 cm next to the roof ridge on an interior wall (made of Fermacell with fiberglass wallpaper) in the living room. The chimney would then have a height of about 3.50 m in the living area and about 1.50 m above the roof. The pipe diameter should be 150 mm, and above the roof the chimney should be designed as a pipe in RAL color, matching the roof tiles.

We have already spoken to the district chimney sweep and from his point of view we can realize it this way. We will receive the installation permit shortly and the installation should of course be carried out by a specialist company.

Now my questions.

1. Is the installation of a lightweight chimney under the mentioned conditions also possible without major renovation work afterwards? I imagined that the chimney would be assembled, then plastered or rendered without the wall behind having to be re-wallpapered.

2. What must be considered for the roof penetration? How must this be realized so that the insulation properties remain intact and no thermal bridge occurs? And how should the vapor barrier and the underlay membrane be connected to the chimney to prevent the ingress of moisture and thus also mold growth?

The roof structure looks as follows from inside to outside

16x110mm spruce profiled boarding > 12.5mm gypsum fire protection board > 20mm wooden battens > 0.20mm PE foil as vapor barrier > 250mm mineral insulation > 45x245 rafters > vapor-open underlay membrane > 25mm counter battens > 38x58mm battens > roof tiles

3. The chimney sweep intends to clean the chimney once a year from the roof. How much dirt accumulates during cleaning, after all, the cleaning hatch is located right in our living room.

I am already looking forward to your answers.

Regards Jochen
