Hello!

Starting January 2012, we will renovate a detached house from 1965 into an Efficiency House 85. I already have the expert reports and requirements here.

The house has a volume of 631m³, of which 479.64m³ is heated.

Until now, the house was heated with night storage heaters. There are 2 chimneys, both of which do not reach through the roof, so at least one would need to be restored. Since the roof also needs to be done, that wouldn’t be a problem.

There are no gas lines in our village, so if we use a gas boiler, we would either have to bury the tank or enclose it.

The plan is for wall or underfloor heating (in the bathroom and toilet), as this saves the most space and allows for nicely large windows on the south and west sides (Uw 0.9).

Our builder’s recommendation is an air heat pump with domestic hot water heating. Ground heat would be difficult because our 1087m² plot has a slight slope and geothermal drilling has already failed on several projects in the street...

We are still considering orienting the system so that, if there is money left over (knock on wood!!!), we could plan for a water-carrying fireplace or pellet stove with an outdoor chimney. The location would conveniently be right above the buffers...

I think an air heat pump should be able to operate economically here (ZIP code 64823), but I’m also somewhat tempted by an oil heating system. The costs would be manageable since we will have a well-insulated house...

OK, anyone who can give a guaranteed forecast for the future would become very rich, but I think that aside from sensible considerations, it’s just as much a risk game as taking out a loan. Who knows what interest rates will be in 10 years...

Who has experience with air heat pumps/oil heating systems in such a project? Does anyone have other suggestions for me?

Thanks, entertaining

Yes, precise sizing and calculation. Additionally, reliable consumption forecast. This quickly clarifies the question of the appropriate heat generator! ;) Oil is probably hardly an option upon careful consideration.

Hello Kurzweilig,

I am somewhat surprised that so many options are still possible? What does the energy consultancy say, since an energy-efficient house 85 is already a nice goal!

As for oil, this can and will not be the case, as Euro has already written. It completely contradicts the concept and the efficiency standard 85. This is both in view of the price development and the environmental aspects such as fine dust and CO2 emissions from oil!

To create a heating concept, a reliable calculation is needed that compares the different systems based on the standard and user conditions. Basically, all are possible, since, for example, an underground liquid gas tank is easy to realize, but with an appropriate plot size, a surface tank is also possible. If you pursue the sustainability idea, then with a gas heating system all possibilities are open, since purified and regeneratively produced biogas is also used, instead of an air heat pump which is actually an electric heater. The hectic political efforts to reduce subsidies for regenerative electricity generation show where electricity prices will develop.

Regards
