Hello,

we have a waterlogging problem in our garden because the soil is very clayey.

We are getting the Rasenspecht to aerate the lawn and to carry out a soil replacement (remove clay soil and add sand).

Can you recommend a lawn rake to better distribute the sand and work it into the lawn?

What should one pay attention to when choosing a lawn rake?

-best made of stainless steel or?
-should the handle be firmly fixed or can you just use one with a Gardena combisystem adapter?
- how many crossbars? For example, the Sandraupe from Rasenspecht has only 3 and most others have 4
-Is there a market leader or original for the lawn rake, e.g. Sandraupe from Rasenspecht or the lawn rake from rasenrakel.de, or does the manufacturer not matter because they are all basically the same anyway?

Thank you very much for your help

Seriously? Asking at seven in the morning on a weekday and already complaining three hours later?

A shitty soil doesn’t really get better by the measures you planned. That should have been worked on before laying the lawn.

Aside from that, the choice of tool doesn’t matter. As a DIYer, I wouldn’t even buy a rake but would just go with a wheelbarrow and a shovel. Simply spread the sand evenly and that’s it.

As already said in the other thread: what matters is where the compaction is. A little sand on the surface or a 9cm aerifier achieves absolutely nothing if the compaction is in the subsoil.

No special tools are needed to spread the sand. Wheelbarrow, shovel, and then smooth it out with the back of a wide rake. The rest is taken care of by nature. Success doubtful, see above

I would also initially create a test hole at a clogging spot and repeatedly perform small infiltration tests at different depths to rule out that the compaction is too deep for the planned action.

If not, the planned procedure works very well to improve surface drainage but is extremely strenuous! I would recommend the lawn rake not as a screw-on or plug-in variant but as a welded model; handle attachment depending on the existing system. A wooden handle works just as well. I find a certain length and thus working radius reasonable.

The sand without 0 fractions must be dust-dry and the grass very short-cut for effective raking. Otherwise, it won’t fall properly.

Alternatively, the already recommended aids certainly work, but also a coarse street broom. For larger areas, I would personally work rather with an inverted pallet, weighted with concrete paving stones. Pulled by a rope, simply like a workhorse, several times across the area.

If it’s only about drainage, you can also just remove the cores and initially leave the holes open. That worked well with my loamy humus topsoil and was not visible through the turf. There are also freaks who drill (deeper holes) into the lawn with their drill. That is said to work too.

None of this can do any harm, I would just play around on a small test area and see what works for you.

We have been answering this topic for you in several forums since early May, but whenever the answers are inconvenient, you just keep asking which devices you should buy. If confirmation doesn't come quickly enough, you like to complain. As you have been told for three and a half months, the problem lies deeper (pun intended). Which device you spread some sand with on the surface will hardly interest the impermeable layer at a depth of 1m.
