I have little understanding of the fact that people have recently become afraid of plants. If you like raspberries, plant some. On the area, I would take at most 2. Hill is nonsense.
Autumn raspberries actually have fewer worms and diseases. I also find less yield. I have no root barrier. What is bothering is cut off and done. So I would plant autumn raspberries again at any time.
We bought from Lubera back then, it bears fruit twice a year, so actually always a few, is resistant and worm-free. We have no root barrier and meanwhile enjoy that it spreads. And if it gets too much, it is pruned. No comparison to the blackberry, which actually spread another 2 or 3 meters, so we destroyed it.
I would also differentiate between blackberry and raspberry, blackberries can actually become a problem (if nothing is done for a very long time).
I had raspberries in the Berlin garden and they spread well (when I was too sick to control them). The new gardener was able to remove / cut them back without any problems. I would also transplant raspberries without root barriers. A mound is a cute idea, but depending on the construction, it could cause the water to always drain away and they might dry out.
The newer varieties of cultivated blackberries are also unproblematic. The wild forms or old cultivated forms tend to spread aggressively. Our blackberry has a trellis and stays quite well behaved there. The yield of autumn raspberries is also more for snacking, unless you plant several meters.
First of all, thanks for your opinions and experiences.
We (two adults) really like eating raspberries. I’m not sure yet how many plants we should plant for a sufficient yield. That probably also depends on the varieties. But would you say that two raspberry plants should be enough? Otherwise, I would just plant 4 or so.
I think I have to install some kind of root barrier or something if I want to plant the raspberries on the neighbor’s boundary. The alternative would somehow be in the middle of the lawn. That would probably be convenient because you can just mow away the rhizomes, but it might not look so nice after a few years..
