Hello everyone,

since we have been dealing with the topic of floor plans for some time now, we have probably become a bit "set in our ways." For some reason, we assumed that only a half-turned staircase would be an option for us and accepted that as a given.

This assumption was based on various suggestions from prefab house companies and probably also on our own lack of ideas. On Monday, we had another appointment where the consultant presented us with a floor plan featuring a quarter-turned staircase.

Now we have been considering back and forth for 3 days which staircase probably has which advantages and disadvantages. So far, we have come up with the following points:

[*]More comfortable going up and down with a quarter-turned staircase
[*]More spacious hallway with a quarter-turned staircase (somehow, I am afraid that the corridor will be too small with a half-turned staircase?)
[*]More effective use of space with a half-turned staircase

Are there maybe other aspects we haven’t thought of?

Briefly about the building project:
The ground floor is to include, besides the kitchen / living-dining area, a shower bathroom, a storage room, and an office. Upstairs, 3 rooms and a bathroom are to be created. We will be building with a basement. The house will have 1.5 stories, and the ground floor + upper floor are to measure around 150 sqm together.

I have tried to depict the two options here. The staircase in the quarter-turned option is not entirely correct – it is not supposed to have a landing, and the scale is also off. But it should be enough to get an idea (hopefully).

I would really appreciate your opinions.

I would choose the option with the half-turned staircase. This makes the entire entrance area more inviting.

3/4 spiral stairs are more tiring to walk on but save space. Our kids find the 3/4 a bit more difficult compared to friends who have a 1/4 spiral, but the staircase takes up less space.

The stairwell seems very small to me - too small. Variante 2 does not fit into the house as it is. I see wasted space because of the additional corridor and also not the required length. The narrow corridor speaks against this form. I think, as already said, that V1 was also planned too small. Overall, this stair shape is the most economical, but also in terms of comfort. This should be considered in stair planning!

Ps: nothing can be said about the floor plan: it lacks dimensions, site plan, upper floor, north arrow, etc.

Did I understand that correctly: In an existing floor plan, the staircase is to be redesigned according to your wishes? That can't possibly work ... .

Either you find a floor plan with a staircase according to your wishes, or you have to have it planned freely.
