Which artist do you prefer? Should it be a painting or a graphic or rather a photograph?

... and not everything labeled art is art for everyone. Art means something different to each person.

For Nordanney, abstract art is not art; for you, vacation photos are not art.

For you, it should be a picture or painting that also has or obviously should have a place of importance in a visible spot. I think the place above the sofa is always an eye-catcher.
Therefore, you should take a little more time to choose YOUR artwork. Especially the choice of pictures on walls has to grow. You have to live with the walls and at some point think: exactly there I can imagine something large, colorful, black and white, small, a collection, natural, abstract, funny.
It also does not always have to be a painting: fortunately, the time of the roaring stags is over (although there are still places where it fits), nowadays people also use reliefs or various materials and structures arranged differently, forming a collage (e.g., driftwood, metal, fabric, tree slices).
A beautiful rug would also be an idea, or you focus on a valuable frame in which a mirror is embedded.

In this respect, your parents are right that at an explicit spot something artistic belongs on the wall – but the concept of art and its content has clearly changed (fortunately).

However, whether you put money into something you have no idea about, I strongly doubt – after all, a proper portion of passion is part of understanding art... and if you (still) don't have that, then you don't have to pretend otherwise ;)

Although I am an amateur myself, I allow myself a tip: do not buy artworks by name, but buy such works from "unknown" artists from small galleries that you like. I would expect you to get the best price-performance ratio that way. And big names can be irrelevant to you, as long as you have something real on the wall and you like it.

I also think painting myself is a nice thing. As long as you like abstract art, can't really draw well, you can still pick up a brush. Definitely won't be noticed, will surely be admired, and is definitely a one-of-a-kind piece. ;):)

We have now ordered a wall decal with the text: " Wenn wir mal wieder Geld haben, hängt hier ein Picasso" :D:D:D

Otherwise, we also had some beautiful holiday pictures printed on canvas.
