We want to buy a terraced house with a middle unit in the near future and as is usually the case: the garden is not particularly big, about 6.5 meters wide and 8 meters long... I dream, in connection with my main room, also of a weeping ornamental cherry (Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula'). It will grow about 5 meters high and 3-4 meters wide... do you think that will work?! Or is such a tree too big for a small garden? I am thinking of planting it as far as possible in the left back corner (viewed from the terrace)... What are the regulations regarding the boundaries to the neighbor’s property, the house, etc.?! LG

Hi Elvsiett,

That would work, but it's tight. There isn't much space left in the garden. If you don't mind that, you can certainly plant the tree.

I am also of the opinion that you can calmly plant the tree first - it does take a while until it grows big.

Even if the issue has long been settled, it provokes one of the most typical neighborhood disputes. On such a small plot, at most apple bushes should be planted. A massive cherry tree only causes trouble. Fallen fruit in the neighbor's garden, leaves, a branch hanging over, casting shade. To prune it, you also have to enter the neighbor's property, and depending on the neighbor, that can end badly. No one benefits if you have to cut down the tree after 10 years.
