Hello everyone,

We plan to have an old house demolished before we build the new house.

Last week I noticed that the fence of the house was partially damaged (in addition to some other damages in the house and garden).

I have inquired both with the demolition/construction company and the company responsible for the removal of the old gas line, and both confirmed to me that they did not cause this.

I cannot think of any other legitimate reason why someone would cause such damage.

Should I simply assume that this is sabotage? Should this incident be covered by the construction insurance?

Thank you very much
Best regards

Then it's time for a construction fence, otherwise you'll constantly have strangers on it who are just looking around

That may be. But we had a fence, and it was destroyed. A construction fence is not a fortress. I heard from the neighbors that they saw craftsmen working on the construction site. I have no idea who hired craftsmen to destroy my fence, and how I can prevent this from happening again. But at least in this case, is that normally covered by the builders' risk insurance?

And did the neighbors also see the craftsmen at the fence? You don't just step into something like that on the way by, it takes time.

Then get on good terms with the neighbors so they call you if something unplanned happens. And announce your planned work. The insurance will look closely before paying out, I suspect there’s nothing to gain for you.

They told me they had seen the craftsmen working in the garden. Normally, you don’t look closely at what kind of work is being done there.

I hadn’t thought of that. Is it normal to ask the neighbors to keep an eye on what’s happening at the construction site?

Yes, it is normal to look closely. I just wanted to make sure that this kind of incident is covered. I will report the incident and see what happens.

Thank you very much.
