Painting roughcast plaster - which color?

I would like to paint the textured plaster in the stairwell.

For this, I would like to know which paint is suitable. Does the textured plaster need to be primed first? It has not been painted yet. If yes, what kind of primer should be used? It is important to me that the paint is health-friendly, as there is a baby in the household.

You can check whether the plaster needs to be primed. Take a wet sponge and press it against the wall. If the water beads off, it has probably already been primed; if the wall absorbs the water, it needs to be primed to avoid unsightly stains later. Use a solvent-free primer for this. Get detailed advice at the specialist shop, also regarding the tools to be used (suitable roller, brush...).
