Hello, I am using the time to create some order in my apartment. I have a problem: The hallway wallpaper was painted light pink by the previous tenant back then. However, I am not satisfied with the door frames. The light pink color seeps into the door frames. I don't want to hire a painter for that. I would like to paint the door frames myself. Attached are pictures of my hallway so you can see the frames. What can I do about it? The laws of logic tell me to buy white paint and paint along the door frames. But which paint is suitable for this? And how can I manage to draw straight lines along the door frames with the white paint? Is the white paint strong enough to cover the light pink?

Hi, ui, someone really couldn't paint and tape off at all. Simply painting over this color doesn't work. But there are several aspects anyway...

1) To paint your door frame (they are already quite yellowed), you need to at least lightly sand the old paint if it is still stable. If it is peeling, it should be removed. Then you paint the frames white. Important: you mention a previous tenant. Check with your landlord if you are even allowed to do that so easily.

2) The old paint. It is most likely dispersion paint. With a bit of luck, you can make it quite easy for yourself. Take a small brush with lukewarm water and soak the paint a little. After half an hour, rub with a cloth and some/much pressure. If your paint on the frames is good, you can still remove all the paint after years.

3) You get straight lines by either being a virtuoso with the brush or, like 99.99% of all people, using painter's tape to mask off. You paint recklessly over it and then pull it off afterwards.

Thank you very much for your kind advice.

1) : I would sand it with sandpaper or carefully use a small sander (orbital sander) that I have at home.

2) what do you mean by tich?

With "Tich" he will mean a cloth, and on it I would simply put turpentine. I wouldn’t sand anything there at all, these are obviously steel frames that are usually baked on lacquered / powder coated. Sanding causes very expensive damage, and it is not necessary.

Yes, exactly, cloth - damn autocorrect, sorry. Try that really first, turpentine is also a good idea, for me water has already been sufficient several times, so first try the "light" option. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about sanding burnt-in paints, but : don't you have to roughen them up somehow? Otherwise, how does the paint stick?

Slopped-on paint "sticks" even without preparation ;-) Removing a handful of steel door frames, repainting them with baked enamel, and reinstalling them costs roughly four digits, I would roughly estimate. That would already be a very hefty learning cost.
