Outdoor camera: How to prepare sensibly?

Hello everyone,

we are now about to do the exterior plastering and I am considering preparing 1-2 outdoor cameras in this context.

For this, I imagine drilling a hole through the masonry (36.5 cm Ytong) from the attic on two house fronts to lay a cable that the plasterers can then simply plaster over. I want to connect the cameras to these cables.

I haven't really dealt much with the technology of these outdoor cameras yet; this idea came to me spontaneously today while I was walking on the scaffolding. The question that now arises for me is:

[*]What kind of cable should I sensibly lay to the outside? A simple power cable and connect the cameras via WLAN? Power would be easily available in the attic. Or a LAN cable that supplies the cameras with PoE? However, installing a LAN socket in the attic is no longer feasible without major effort.

Thanks for tips!

Thomas

LAN cable for POE. Never use cameras over WLAN if possible. You do not need a LAN socket. Just attach a keystone module. Cameras should not be mounted too high. Otherwise, you only see heads and no faces.

Exactly. If you want to be absolutely sure that you can later mount almost any camera, have a small empty box installed. Some cameras have hardly any space in their base to accommodate the protruding remainder of the cat cable with keystone from the wall. There are connection boxes, but in 100% of the cases, they are really ugly.

And if you also want to see something at night, make sure that the camera is not looking too much along a wall: you should mount it so that it can show the desired area without visible house walls in the image. Reflections of the IR LEDs usually present in the camera will cause you to get extreme reflections from the walls, meaning you effectively see nothing because the wall visible in the image reflects so strongly (yes, even with plaster) that the camera drastically reduces the exposure.

Put in a junction box or simply a small surface-mounted enclosure. Inside that with installation cable, Keystone adapter on it, and from there with a patch cable to the camera. Installation cable to the device is always tricky, and if the cable is broken or too short in the last few meters, you have a big problem.

The enclosure is also ideal for the desired preparation. Then you don’t have to let an orange cable or ring dangle there forever.

I would not lay a cable first but rather an empty conduit. This way you are much more flexible with what you ultimately need. In addition, a replacement (in case someone cuts the cable) can be done quickly.

Well, in 99.99% of cases, you need a CAT cable and possibly NYM at desired locations. You might as well install it then.
