Your house builder should know that (or was it renovation?) Just make a cross-section through the roof, because that depends a little on the roof structure (how much external roof insulation and what is the structure under the rafters? How wide and high is the ridge beam and are there clamps / brackets? What rafter spacing is there and how many reinforcements can you install according to the structural engineer?

I do not have these detailed information yet. We are currently in the final stages of the preliminary drafts and have just swapped two rooms, which brought up the issue of the roof window. We are now considering whether a roof window is necessary or if regular windows in the wall are sufficient. I am just pondering the possibilities right now.

then your best contact person is your architect (and energy consultant?) because so many windows in the roof significantly change the calculations. Also think about a possibly necessary second escape route. That could be difficult because it has minimum dimensions (also maximum entry heights) which would hardly be achievable with the geometry as roof windows or gable windows.

But I find two opposing roof windows very charming! My parents retrofitted a roof window in the kitchen years ago, my sister did the same in the open-plan room. Both had a great lighting effect, from gloomy to impressively bright. A roof window lets in more and a "different" kind of light than a vertically installed window.

Preliminary drafts can also be shown. Although rafter spacing is not yet included, it is already possible to estimate how it will work out later.
