Hello

About three weeks ago, I laid my new lawn. Now I have three questions about it:

1. The blades are now about 4-5 cm high, how long should I wait before I mow for the first time?

2. There are still some bare spots (see picture), when should I overseed here? Now or after the first cut?

3. Meanwhile, something else is starting to grow between the grass again (see picture 2). What is the best way to deal with this? Pulling it out will be difficult since it is relatively small.

Thanks in advance

Regards & have a nice weekend
Jörg

First of all, you still have to wait, you can't mow yet, only when the grass is about 10cm high, roughly after 6 weeks. You will also take care of the weeds later. However, your soil looks poorly prepared, there are stones everywhere, not only will you step on them, but the lawnmower can also get damaged because of this.

Best regards
Sabine

Hello,

thank you for the information. It really seems a bit intense at this point. There are still some individual stones inside (diameter 0.5 - 1.0 cm).

What about the reseeding? Now or later?

I would wait even though it surely wouldn't hurt, however you cannot rake in the grass seed now and it is then questionable whether it will take root. If you wait a bit longer, you can walk on the lawn and work the grass seed a little into the soil where needed. What is very important now is that the lawn is kept moist, otherwise the tiny grass roots will die immediately.

Best regards

I also think the soil doesn’t look good. Maybe not properly prepared? Because quite a lot of weeds are coming up, I see many small and large stones, and it doesn’t look like nutritious soil to me... more like topsoil that was lying around from construction or something? How did you prepare the soil?

I always mow at about 10 cm, by then it’s still quite possible that the gaps will grow in a bit. Where it’s still bare after the first mowing, I reseed. For that, I gently rake up the soil in the corresponding spots (so as not to damage any shoots that might already be there) and then I sow and press it lightly. This has always worked well for me so far.

Give it some fertilizer now before the rain! A little! Not wheelbarrow loads. About a 5l bucket for 250sqm. No more. Don't mow yet. Don't overseed yet. The rake still destroys too much.
