Hello, we are currently in the planning phase for the new construction of a single-family house in Owl. Now inevitably the question arises whether the exterior facade should be plastered, i.e. single-layer with ETICS or double-layer with Dutch clinker brick cladding. The goal is a KfW 70 standard. We had actually already decided that it should be clinker because it "breathes" much better and I have not been particularly enthusiastic about the sealed plaster facades so far, also with regard to maintenance. However, a builder recently told me that there are plaster facades that last 30 years with the first coat of paint. And in combination with a LW heat pump and integrated ventilation system, this would certainly be justifiable. Especially since the costs for a plaster facade are 10,000 - 15,000€ below the clinker facade. So my question: which construction of ETICS systems is the most durable, and now I don’t only mean the insulation material but also the plaster and the paint. That also plays a big role. Thank you in advance for your answers....

Since when do stones breathe?

Hello,

Interesting statement

These statements have been around for a long time; however, I don't consider them really reliable. However, you can increase the durability with a fungicide-algicide coat; these coatings are also available on an ecological basis. When calculating the cost-benefit ratio, you should always compare the costs of cladding with the expected repainting interval of a plaster building; the technique has no place in this comparison.

We have found that the degree of soiling / cleaning options depend significantly on the positioning of the house on the plot as well as the number of floors. Example: if the weather side is facing north, the garage is placed at this spot and it is a classic single-story building, usually a regular treatment of the north facade with a high-pressure cleaner is sufficient. Easy to handle for private individuals and also easy to manage for people with two left hands.

It looks different if the building to be erected – which I don't really see for OWL – is located in the catchment area of coal or industry. In these cases, however, a cladding stone doesn't really help you; it only “pretends” a “clean” facade. Because even the clinker absorbs rainwater, then dries off and retains the dirt in the clinker. That is why especially white cladding facades often look “dirty” after a short time.

Rhineland regards

Well, by breathing I mean that a two-shell construction in combination with clinker is more diffusion-open and moisture can be better transported away. How about the insulation material; are there differences in terms of durability? Is only the coating that decisive?

You can ignore the moisture diffusion of the walls. Not even 1% of the moisture generated inside the house diffuses out through the walls. Whether with clinker 0.3% or with ETICS only 0.2% goes through the walls is six of one, half a dozen of the other. The moisture leaves the house only through drainage and ventilation!

What else comes to mind is a bicycle that falls over awkwardly and can thus punch a hole in the cleaning cover. Which would probably be completely impossible with clinker.
