Hello everyone,

when walking through the new development areas, you increasingly notice that the windows are becoming wider and less tall.

We have also noticed the trend of glazed corners.

Overall, we like this style and would like to incorporate it into our new build if possible.

However, I have no idea what dimensions these windows have. In our current apartment, we mostly have double windows installed with a width of about 160 cm, the windowsill is at about 1 m, and the height of the windows is about 1.3 m. This makes the individual windows appear taller than they are wide.

At what height are the windows usually set in such a new build? What dimensions are "typical" if it is supposed to look modern?

Overall, they should appear rather wider than tall or square.

Best regards

Well, one should also take a look inside some rooms. Often, there are [brüstungshöhe] of 120 to 150 cm installed, so that especially shorter people can no longer look properly out of the window.

There are certainly rooms where this is appropriate, but especially in the kitchen I find it terrible, at least for [brüstungshöhe] over 130 cm. You might as well live in the basement.

Small children also have no chance to look out of the window.

We have all windows, except in the bathrooms, at full room height. I thought the trend was also going in this direction. We like it anyway.

The windows must match the house style!

I like it exactly the other way around, tall and narrow. Our windows on the ground floor are almost all 1.5 m high, about 1 m wide, and several with mullions, only those under 1 m have been made single-pane. The sill height is 70 cm with the finished floor. What I like least are those square 1m x 1m windows that almost every house here has, we haven't installed anything like that here at all, and where there were windows like that or similar, we changed the window openings. For example, in the old conservatory there were several 1.5 x 1.5 m windows, now there are windows that are 1 m wide and 1.8 m high with a sill height of 40 cm.

The question somewhat points towards a "standard window". Clear answer: that does not exist. The design determines the windows, and the window manufacturer produces them according to the measurements.

The (parapet) height does follow a kind of standard. Usually, from the 2nd floor upwards there are prescribed minimum heights, which can be undercut (then fall protection must be provided), and the top edge of the window is often the ceiling height minus the roller shutter box.

Whether a house "looks modern" in my opinion also depends on the overall design. Then you really need an architect ... In general, lots of glass and lots of steel look modern (but is the entrance to the Louvre still modern today? Is the Berlin Central Station modern?).

You should know what is important to you. I would approach it from the inside: lots of light where it makes sense; floor space and privacy where that makes sense. Then pay attention to the elevations. And if necessary, go back to the start... If you find "your" house in a catalog, then build it. Otherwise, you should try it with an architect.
