Unfortunately, we have several steps because the house actually consists of 4 different buildings. One step down from the hallway to the kitchen, then further through the corridor and another 2 steps down to the laundry room. Upstairs is no better: one step in front of the living room (but a partition wall is planned there) and then 4 steps down from the side room into the new bathroom+dressing room.

It's not ideal, we would have preferred it differently, but it can't be helped. Therefore, you would be well advised to leave out the step. It’s not necessary, only a hindrance; for a visual separation, you can also work with shelves/cabinets.

There are black and yellow adhesive tapes like that, which also work well for visual demarcation.
