Hello everyone,

We have now been living in our own home for 2 years and now our gable wall needs to be re-plastered. Possibly our last opportunity to enlarge the forgotten outdoor lighting...
On 09.05 the scaffolding will be erected and within the next 2 weeks the existing plaster will be removed, new plaster applied, and finally painted.

We have one outdoor power outlet with continuous power in the middle of the gable side.
Now I would like to tap into this outdoor outlet and expand the outdoor lighting on the gable side by 4 more outdoor power outlets.

So my question to you is:
- How deep would I have to chase in order to lay the cable, or what would be the minimum depth? (The less the better)
- I would have to run the power cable horizontally across the entire gable side... how do I best fix it (in the chase)? Like indoors every few cm/m with some plaster?
- Since the existing outdoor power outlet is relatively centrally located, I would have to run a cable to the left and one to the right, so there would be 3 cable ends at the previously existing outlet (which could lead to space problems), or would there be a better solution?

Thank you very much

Normally, it should be sufficient if the cable is installed so deep that it is flush with the masonry. Usually, 1 cm of plaster is applied on top. Much deeper would be unnecessary

That is not allowed at all for structural reasons

That's why I was thinking maybe about 2cm below the old plaster. I think that would be about 1cm in the masonry. That should still be twistable with 36cm bricks, right?

So with 36 cm bricks, almost everything is allowed when chasing. Both vertical and horizontal. But there are installation zones. I myself have some background in electrical work, but I work in industry and don't have much to do with regular home installations. So don’t chisel my statement in stone.

I would also do it like you at my house. However, it would be correct if you stay within the installation zone. I have attached two photos for you. Attach either with nail clips or just some plaster. Something will go over it later anyway. The important thing is that it doesn’t fall out. The chasing depth is, as mentioned above, almost irrelevant. Even 3 cm would be okay with 36 cm bricks as far as I know. However, it’s only about one cable going left and right. Accordingly, I would take 1 cm.

That depends on your feel for it. I would probably still go for one junction box. Later, the light fixture will be sitting above it anyway. It is important that airtight boxes are used and the sealing is undamaged. In the end, just thread the cable through. Just google Kaiser outdoor wall box. But I’ll also add a photo for you in the attachment.

Thank you all in advance. What do you think about chasing grooves? It concerns the 36 cm blocks that are reddish and porous with Styrofoam ball filling. I wanted to chase grooves as little as possible, so the question is: would you cut a groove only about 1 cm deep so that the cable fits in and simply fix it every few centimeters with some plaster? After that, the standard house plaster goes on top. Or should I go a bit deeper? Regarding a box in the wall, I would be rather reluctant. It would be very tight for the lamp to cover it since it is about spotlights, and then I would have a "big" hole in the wall. How would you proceed best when chasing grooves? Regarding the apparatus? Thank you very much
