hello everyone,

the janitor in the apartment I moved into simply laid the laminate over the carpet. now I have often heard that this is not good at all - but why exactly? what consequences could I still face here?

thanks in advance

Laminate flooring should not be installed on carpet because the joints can then move too much and become loose. Tongue and groove will no longer hold together properly. However, there are also firm industrial carpets like the one here in the office, where I wouldn't see any problem.

If you didn't pay for it, then it's not so bad. Or?

Hello,

in general, it is not permitted to lay floor coverings of any kind on top of an existing carpet.

Reasons for this are:

--> the one described above
--> mold formation can occur more easily because the carpet virtually attracts moisture
--> hygiene reasons, countless bacteria and germs reside in the carpet, which are released into the interior through the edge gaps with every step. This is especially bad for children or allergy sufferers.

I would definitely not lay laminate or engineered parquet on an existing carpet.

Regards, Andreas

Where exactly is the difference between carpet and impact sound insulation boards or mats? The impact sound insulation yields just like carpet! The hygiene reasons are more than laughable. There would have to be a danger to life in rooms where only carpet lies. You must be experts.

Hello Yogi,

you are making claims here that are not accurate. I hope you are not installing parquet or laminate flooring, because otherwise you will quickly have a problem.

So, what is the difference between impact sound insulation and carpet flooring.

First of all, every supplier or manufacturer will give you a specification as to what must be used as impact sound insulation; if you deviate from this, you immediately lose the warranty.

Impact sound insulation must have a thermal conductivity value of 0.02-0.06 W/mK and must not compress strongly under load from walking and/or furniture; because of this alone, carpet flooring is already off the table. Furthermore, before installation there is an obligation to check the substrate for moisture, flatness, cracks, etc.; you cannot carry this out if carpet flooring is lying on it. The checks are mandatory and must be carried out without exception, including the moisture check, even if the screed has been there for 100 years.

Then please give me one reason why I would get moisture into the floor through a carpet. If the carpet has been there for years, I don't need to measure moisture. I can also check flatness with a carpet.
