Hi everyone!

We are currently planning whether we should leave our kitchen open or install a sliding door between the kitchen and the living room.
I have attached the floor plan. What do you think?
At the moment, I tend to leave out the sliding door. That way, you have more space in the kitchen thanks to the counter. Also, I can imagine that the door would never be closed... And it's really a big cost factor...

Thanks and best regards!

Hi Milanni,

I would leave out the countertop extension at the kitchen for now, since you have the dining room right behind it.
Whether you want a closed or open kitchen... -> Well, that's really very individual. Personally, I always find it better when I can separate the kitchen and the living room. (For example, reading vs. baking cakes, or the dishwasher is running, etc...)

I once created a survey on this topic in the forum, there were many interesting opinions, maybe it will help you a bit:

Oh cool! Yes, that exactly answers my question... It really is a matter of taste. The counter is not a real counter but rather a countertop above the countertop, so to speak. The kids can sit there while I cook, and I can also use it for rolling out dough, etc.

I will talk to some friends to see if they even use the sliding door.
Thanks already for the help!

Hello, Spontaneous suggestion for consideration. Leave out the counter, instead have a moved-forward countertop. Cooktop on the wall. Shorten the utility room by the depth of the tall cabinet to have space for tall cabinets with refrigeration and heating appliances there. The island as a pure work island (possibly with a sink). This can then be excellently used as a buffet. Whether with or without sliding doors is, in my opinion, rather a matter of taste.

I agree with the tenor:
- overhanging countertop
- pure work island OR sink island
- leave out the sliding door - you can always retrofit it later if you feel the need for it.

I can only agree. Cooktop on the wall, then exhaust air can also be easily implemented if necessary. However, with a countertop above the countertop, you lose a continuous depth again. And it is precisely this that makes an island so useful and practical.

We have a double-leaf sliding door between the kitchen and dining room, and even though it is basically open, I wouldn't want to miss it in certain situations.
