Is lighting planning only with recessed spotlights sensible?

I recently wrote on the topic that I equipped my consultation room with spots. That was a planning mistake. I only turn them on when I have to tidy up or look into the cabinets. When patients are here and I am working, I only have standing and desk lamps on. Spots look terrible in residential houses. I still have some in the kitchen between the kitchen units. They are okay there, but never used as main lighting. Beautiful lamps do that. I really find spots overrated in private spaces. Even in the bathroom or utility room I didn't want any. Spots are good for lighting a picture museum-quality.

Exactly ... back then I also installed 4 spotlights in the living room. Yes, they are aimed at specific pieces of furniture and yet I almost never turn them on.

I like the spotlights in the hallway (with motion detector) and in the walk-in shower and would choose them again. Otherwise, pendant lights, floor lamps, wall lights.

For fixed light connections, consider enough circuits and possibly depending on the position, two-way switches. Two-way switches are very practical, for example, in the bedroom, so I can switch the bedside lamp and the ceiling light both from the bed and from the door. Getting up in the dark in the morning, turn on the bedside light, go to the bathroom, and turn off the bedside light at the door. Saves bruised shins ;).

I don't think much of that either. You can do that in the hallway,... you can do it anywhere, but a small simple double spotlight is just as good and does not impose itself visually or cost-wise as unpleasantly. In the guest WC, for example, a small spotlight plus the mirror lighting is enough.
