Is it possible for a layperson to spray walls and ceilings? Experiences?

We want to paint our house ourselves. Now the question arises whether we should go through the whole house with a roller in the traditional way or if it might make sense to invest 600 EUR in an Airless device and save quite a bit of time. Masking has to be done anyway with both options. Has anyone done this before and gained experience with it? Would you do it that way again or rather not?

We have done both. The spray device was not bad. Make sure it is one with a long hose and a standing supply tank. Full-body condom and protective goggles are mandatory. Roller application is very exhausting in the long run, but in my opinion it is rather opaque.

I was thinking of the Wagner Control Pro 350 M Airless paint spraying device.

Well, I'm stumped there. With the branded devices, maybe check if you can find a review on Amazon.

We bought such a device as a test. After the hallway was finished, we cleaned it for over 2 hours, packed it up, and returned it.

- Spraying goes quickly and with even color coverage with a little practice
- Especially inside corners and inner edges become very clean, as there are no transitions visible between brush/roller
- EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING must be masked and covered with foil. If you forget something, it will come back to haunt you. The tape should also hold well, otherwise the draft quickly whirls away the foil and then you have fine paint mist everywhere, while the fine droplets also dry quickly and then become even harder to remove
- Cleaning the device is a real mess. We had the problem that the paint ran down from the nozzle through the hose to the device over time, the hose touches the floor and the device is carried around, you can guess the rest...

In short: it really works well, but the effort before and after is absolutely extreme and negates all the time saved.

I am currently spraying my house with a Bosch PFS 5000 E. It was once available on Amazon for around 100€, so I wanted to give it a try.

Masking is extremely important. Do this during the construction phase. No doors installed, no floors laid, no sockets or switches. Then it works. The floor can stay free, afterwards just go over it with a floor scraper; you just have to be careful around the windows.

The device is perfect for priming with deep primer. You need goggles, hearing protection, and a mask. It can be done alone.

If you want to paint, then a second person MUST follow with a roller. Apply generously once, and then roll once from top to bottom with the roller. Moisten the roller with water at the beginning. The roller compensates for unevenness from the spray pattern and gives a slight texture.

You have to paint twice. Then it looks good.

The device applies a lot of paint to the wall in an extremely short time. You have to reload every 90 seconds, you cover the meters; the person with the roller can hardly keep up.

Especially practical on the ceiling.

Since the roller is not dipped, it hardly gets paint-wet and is therefore not heavy – the work with the roller is in no way comparable to real painting with the roller. Very easy work.

The paint must be strained so there are no clumps. There are large hair strainers on Amazon for little money. Also buy a large measuring cup, 2 or even 5 liters. Then stir the paint mechanically, mix in 2-3 teaspoons of orange or yellow tint (so you can better see where you have been, and the color is not so cold), then stir in about 1l of Tiefengrund LF as thinner per 10 liters. Then strain the 2 or 5 liters into the measuring cup. And off you go!

You must not take work breaks, then everything dries up and clogs. 75m² of living space without the ceiling is a relaxed morning. Afterwards clean everything under plenty of running water, or put it in a bucket if you want to continue the next day.

The paint consumption is somewhat higher, but we painted with the 25€ for 10l paint from Toom. Co-builders had StoSil – 10l for 40€. They also had to go twice. With a roller.

I would do it again immediately and can only recommend it to everyone.
