So, we don't have a basement, but I thought that if the relevant wastewater contains feces (which would be the case for us with the toilet), you would need a backflow preventer type 3F - I saw those costing over 1000 euros on the first Google search.

That's probably correct, but we don't have a toilet in the basement, so the mechanical version was sufficient. Anyway: A good decision to install the backflow protection!

I think I would install one, the costs aren't that high.
You also put up a fire extinguisher and hope never to need it.

Yes, of course, that's possible. Backwater valves are available as retrofit kits for the inspection opening. The models just need to be compatible.

When heavy rain comes, and water pushes up from above and below, the shaft is the first to be flooded, and you remember, no inspection/cleaning done for 5 years because it’s too tight and no one can get to it.
