Is a flat carport possible without a building permit?

If you just want to drive a car into a shelter, you only need standing height at the exit point. With the low height, you should be able to avoid the cubic meter restrictions on enclosed space in NRW. I’m thinking 4m long, 2m wide, and 1.3m high with a hatch at the exit. That makes 10.4 m3. Then the small car could be sheltered somewhere without a building permit, right?

For covered parking spaces, there is no spatial limitation but a surface area limitation, namely 30 sqm. A standard single parking space is therefore also exempt from approval without any tricks.

A carport usually has to be approved, right? We have a permit for a double carport but want to eventually give almost all cars a roof. The latest addition is a 17-year-old Smart Roadster for a son. It will become a classic and needs a roof but no height.

Since 2019, up to 30sqm floor area it does not. Since your double carport exceeds that and/or was built earlier, it required approval and therefore every extension of buildings for vehicles must be approved. A volume limit does not help either.

So I'm asking too... I want to put a carport next to my garage, preferably a lean-to carport, so does that require a permit? If I place it freestanding next to it, is it exempt from permission?

Thank you very much. Knowledge becomes outdated so quickly. Does this also apply to a garden shed? That would be great.
