Hello everyone,
First of all, I want to say that I am a layperson when it comes to roof insulation... Now to the topic: we own a condominium including special ownership of the attic. I now want to convert this into a hobby room. Currently, the attic is uninsulated. In the last few days, two roofers were on site because I want to get quotes for roof windows including installation. On this occasion, I asked the roofers a bit about insulation. Both independently said that, because of the construction, insulation is very difficult. The roof construction is a purlin roof... the central purlin is level with the attic floor, as can be seen from the attached drawing. Below the attic are dormers on both sides, whose ceilings are virtually the floor of the attic. (Sounds complicated, I hope you understand me). Now, it is not simply enough to insulate between the rafters, but the floor above the dormers would probably have to be insulated behind the rafters and lined with foil. Moreover, there is the problem that the roof was reroofed about 2 years ago, BUT the roofers used two types of foils. Most of the area under the roof tiles is diffusion-open, but about a quarter is covered with an older white foil that is probably not diffusion-open. The roofers also said that this foil has not been on the market for at least 10 years... The rafter depth is 140 mm, and a heating system is also planned to be installed upstairs. I hope I have not completely confused you now. I want to claim that I have the necessary craft skills and care to insulate the roof... I just want to do it right and keep the learning costs as low as possible. I appreciate every answer, Best regards from Wuppertal, Woody
