Hello everyone,

black tiles (slate look) are to be laid on the floor in my bathroom (size 30 x 60).

My tiler and the consultant at the tile studio strongly recommend the half bond or the 1/3 bond. Would you also recommend this to me? I tend to prefer the "normal" laying pattern (not staggered). Is there a risk that the tiles will not lie exactly next to each other here?

Many thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hi,

I tend to prefer either normal laying or 1/3 offset.
Reasoning:
Tiles usually bowl, meaning they are convex. (The center of the tile is higher when placed on the floor than the corners.)
If you lay them with a half-bond pattern, you have the lowest point of the tile (corners) exactly at the height of the convexity, creating an edge.
With the third-offset pattern, this can be somewhat mitigated so that minimal edges form, which my clients usually can live with.
With normal laying, you don’t get edges, but due to the low corners and the convexity, you get (roughly speaking) a wavy floor.

Please decide for yourself which you can best live with.

Regards, Dirk
