Ours is in the utility room on the ground floor and we have set it to daytime operation using a timer switch, we don't hear it at night when we are sleeping, but when I am awake because of something else and still lying awake in bed it annoys me in the bedroom on the ground floor, we don't hear it on the upper floor.
However, we also always keep the door to the utility room open because the cat goes in and out and the food is in the utility room and the cat flap leads outside. If the door were closed it wouldn't matter at night.
I wouldn't set it up in the garage because it doesn't get enough heat there and works inefficiently. For example, we always run the heat pump when the dryer (condensation dryer) is running because it emits enormous heat and otherwise it would be too warm anyway in the utility room...
